Safety Performance Coaches

An onsite Safety Performance Coach is an un-biased supportive presence whose main purpose is to drive safety and influence change within your organisation.

Unlike a Safety Advisor, who will review and test your safety management systems (SMS) based upon legislation, our Safety Performance Coaches take a more multi-dimensional approach, focusing on the many other factors that affect the safety culture within an organisation, e.g. attitudes, behaviours, teamwork, communication and leadership. It’s this flexible bigger-picture approach that helps us transform safety cultures and bring about genuine sustainable change.

Our coaches observe every-day activities and interactions, identifying the behaviours, beliefs, attitudes and conditions that exist and how they are affecting your safety culture.

The culture of an organisation is made up of the collective thinking and the resultant behaviours of the individuals that comprise it. People’s thoughts about their organisation have been conditioned into them and stand as a result of their perceptions of the past rather than the reality. Conditioning, and the resulting beliefs very often need to be questioned, challenged and restructured in order to move forward positively.

The impartial nature of our coaches’ role means that they are not affected by the internal company politics that usually stifle major change within an organisation. They are therefore able to offer unbiased, objective coaching and feedback to individuals regardless of their status or position without fear of consequence, ensuring individuals work effectively and safely and are empowered to make key decisions to improve safety for themselves and in their sphere of influence.

Coaching deals with the here and now; it is practical, directive and about action. The process of coaching involves focusing on, and completing goals in an agreed timescale. Our Coaches will work closely with the Management Team and Supervision to help establish goals and set targets for development. They will help supervisors understand how best to manage and communicate to their teams in order to maximise safety performance and lead by example.

The presence of our coaches significantly increases the level of supervision and expertise on site. All of our coaches have a strong HSE background, often specialising in a particular industry. This level of expertise also allows for onsite knowledge transfer and intervention, catching damaging behaviours as they happen.

The role of our coaches is dependent upon the client. Before their introduction to your workplace, we will work closely with your leadership team to develop a safety vision that they will commit to and drive forward through the management structure. From this initial platform we will create a tailored coaching strategy with clear and measurable goals and objectives that can be checked at agreed intervals.
